ONA 67 Political Action Winter 2025

March 31, 2025

ONA All Out Nursing Rally

On March 20th, ONA 67 members demanded change. With RN-to-patient staffing ratios, nurses and health-care professionals can work safely and ensure that everyone gets the timely and high-quality care they need and deserve.

"For every patient added to a nurses assignment their patients mortality rate increases by 7 percent" - Alyssa Muchmore, ONA 67 Bargaining Unit President Providence Care Hospital

Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu was in attendence in support of local nurses:

The ratios are the priority bargaining demand for ONA’s 60,000 hospital members as negotiations for a new collective agreement goes to arbitration next month.

“RN staffing ratios or having standards for a maximum number of patients per nurse to care for, have been shown to improve the quality of care, reduce the rates of patient complications and death, increase nurse retention and recruitment rates and save health-care funding dollars,” says Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) Provincial President Erin Ariss, RN. “They are the miracle treatment for much of what ails our health-care system in Ontario. There is no downside to making them the standard in our hospitals.”

Earlier this year on January 29th ONA 67 members joined another All Out Rally in downtown Toronto during active hospital negotiations.

ONA 67 in Solidarity with OPSEU 4104

ONA 67 members joined OPSEU 4104's Information Picket on Workplace Violence at Providence Care Hospital in solidarity on  January 27th.

Members of both unions have been seeing an increase in workplace violence. This information picket was to draw to attention workplace safety in the face of over 90 incidents reports on a single high acuity mental health nursing unit over a 3 month period.

"Members are afraid to come to work." - Rosylynn Blodgett, VP OPSEU 4104

The information picket was picked up in both written and video news media.
