Workplace Violence

The Joint Health and Safety Committee is conducting more regular inspections of all units/departments/programs, working systematically from high-risk to low-risk areas. Please continue to fill out safety reports and call code whites – to document timely and accurate incidents of workplace violence (from staff, patients, family, visitors, etc.).

It is important to report all incidents to account for ‘lost time’ (present or in future); physical or psychological injuries can manifest days or months after an incident.

Workloads

We are all working during unprecedented times with more acute and complex patients, and with fewer fiscal and health human resources (we are grossly short-staffed)!

I encourage all members to fill out a workload form every shift you are working short-staffed, or you can note the increase in your workload (even if you are fully staffed). Consider what is contributing to this increased workload and keep all documentation patient focused.

Fun fact: all workloads can be submitted to me 10 days after date of shift/incident.

Professional Liability Insurance

The College of Nurses of Ontario requires nurses to have PLP coverage when licensed.  You may wish to seek additional insurance; however, ONA has PLP coverage through Trisura Insurance and this is covered with your monthly union dues!

If the amount of the award exceeds the limit of your employer’s policy, the Trisura Policy may cover the excess amount; the Trisura Policy provides excess coverage in the amount of $1,500,000 per loss resulting from malpractice, with a total annual limit of $6,000,000 per member, subject to aggregate Policy limits . For more information visit Liability Insurance at Ontario Nurses' Association.
